Improving schools is complex and challenging; it cannot be done without strong leadership. Improvement Priorities from the AdvancED Accreditation visit encouraged the district to highlight the pockets of excellence noticed by the evaluators. The idea was to get those pockets of teachers into leadership positions enabling them help other teachers replicate their success through purposeful planning and quality lesson design. From this idea the Teacher Leadership Program began in the 2015-2016 school year; challenging and supporting teachers across SCSD#1 to develop leadership skills and strategies.
The program focus is Teacher Leader Model Standards and the instructional expectations of rolling out new curriculum maps, use of data to drive instruction, and development of a collaborative culture of collective responsibility for our students' learning.
The Teacher Leader Model Standards help define how teacher leadership is distinguished from, but works in tandem with, administrative leadership roles to support effective teaching and promote student learning. This program will use professional development for grade level teams to focus on growing and creating increased learning opportunities for teachers and students.
