Welcome Back Letter

Hello RSHS students and parents. I hope you are having a terrific summer.  We are still a few weeks from the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, but I want to take this opportunity to share with you some information about the upcoming year.

We have some exciting year planned at Rock Springs High School and cannot wait to see everyone back on September 3rd.

 

Orientation

            Our new student/freshman orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 27 at 6:30pm in the RSHS auditorium.  We will have a brief presentation for parents and students, along with a message from our new Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Mathew Neal.  After sharing some important information with you, we will have the halls open and teachers in their classrooms for students to walk through their schedules, meet their teachers, and get acquainted with the building.

 

Schedule pick-up/School pictures

            We do not mail out schedules to students during the summer.  Instead, we will follow the schedule below for students to come in and get their school pictures taken (packet enclosed), get their locker assignment, pick up schedules, pay any fines, take care of parking (where applicable), and get their student ID cards.

                       

            Tuesday August 20

                        Juniors                        12:30 – 4:00

            Wednesday August 21

                        Sophomores               8:00 – 11:30

                        Freshman                   12:30 – 4:00

 

Bell Schedule

            Below is the bell schedule we will follow on nearly every day this school year.  Occasionally we will need to use a modified schedule for assemblies or something of that nature, but for the most part, this is the schedule we will follow at RSHS this year.

Dress Code

            The Sweetwater County School District #1 Board of Trustees passed our student dress code in August of 2011. The dress code (Policy JFCA) is enclosed with this letter.  Essentially, students may not wear clothing in disrepair, shorts/skirts/dresses must be at least fingertip length, and shirts must be no lower cut than a straight line across the armpits.  This year we will allow one ‘warning’ before administrative consequences begin to kick in.  Please, dress for success!!

 

Parking

            Students will still be required to obtain a parking permit to use this lot.  Permits are issued only to Juniors and Seniors during the beginning months of the year.  Not all students will qualify for a parking permit. Permits may be applied for and picked up in the Activities Office (352-3455).

 

Activities

Rock Springs High School offers for purchase activity season tickets to all students and community members.  These tickets are good for admission to all regular season sports at RSHS and are valid for the full school year.  The cost of the season ticket represents a significant savings over the daily ticket prices.

We will work very hard to make sure this is up to date, but realize that some of our activities have schedules that change often due to weather or other reasons.

 

Schedule Changes

            We realize from time to time students may want to request a change to their schedule.  We build the master schedule to hopefully benefit all students, but we now have over 1,300 students, making the process one which not all students get all their top choices.  The schedule change policy can be found on our school website under course catalog.  (www.sweetwater1.org/rsh)  Schedule changes may result in a $20 fee.

 

Bring your own device

A year ago, we made a change in relation to student use of technology.  From time to time, we have students request to bring his or her own laptop, iPad, or other technological device.  RSHS now has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) process in place.  We will still continue providing access to school owned computers, but this step allows students to access the school network with their own devices.  Our IT department will be mailing out a letter soon giving you more details on this process.

 

RSHS on Social Media

Staying with a theme of technology, RSHS continues to move further into the world of social media.  The following sites will all be of use to students and parents alike.  These will be used to keep parents and students informed of upcoming events and to pay recognition to our students and staff for the great work they do.  I will work hard to ensure they stay current.

Yearbook

            The spring supplements are in!  If you purchased a book last year, come by and pick up your 16 page supplement.  If you did not, we still have a few left for purchase.  

As well, purchase your 2013-14 year book, advanced purchases begin on August 20/21.  The book will be delivered late in the 2013-14 school year, with an additional supplement to include late spring events and graduation arriving during the coming summer.  The book will remain at a $50 price point, but will be a FULL COLOR yearbook!!

 

Communication

            In order for the greatest success possible for all students, I encourage parents to communicate often with your student’s teachers, coaches, sponsors, and building administrators.  We are here to support, encourage, and develop young minds into the future leaders of our community, state, and nation.  We need your help and want to help you as much as possible.  So please, introduce yourself to us if we haven’t met and visit with us about everything that is on your mind.

            I am looking forward to a very exciting school year.  I hope all of you are as well.  Again, please feel free to communicate often with all of us here at Rock Springs High School.  I believe this to be a key element to student success.  Together, teachers, parents, counselors, and administrators make a powerful team working with students to achieve all their goals and aspirations.  Keep up with us through the various social media and come in to see the school frequently.  We WANT to see you here!
