The STOP and THINK Social Skills Program, Howieknoff
Overview
Sweetwater County School District #1 proudly supports the Stop & Think program
and has implemented this program throughout all the schools in SCSD #1 


STOP and THINK social skills program developed by Howieknoff,  is a nationally acclaimed program that teaches students pro social behaviors. When students learn appropriate skills for getting along with others, solving problems, and resolving conflicts, acting out is no longer their only option.

STOP and THINK empowers your students by giving them choices. They can make good choices or bad choices. STOP and THINK equips you with: proven effective methods for teaching the skills and steps to students; a neutral system of incentives and consequences that eliminates the emotional charge; effective ways of integrating skill use into the school day, taking full advantage of teachable moments; specific on maintaining a safe, positive classroom structure that fosters skill use; a venue for meaningful parent involvement; techniques for promoting student responsibility and use of skills across settings even in emotional, stressful situations.

Research on the STOP and THINK program demonstrates a significant reduction in discipline problems, reductions in the number of suspensions and expulsions, increased academic engaged time for students, increased levels of consistency in the application of discipline strategies by teacher reported confidence in dealing effectively with students who demonstrate behavior problems in the school setting, increase in the use of critical thinking resolving, and problem-solving skills by students, and linking the social skills process to existing parent training programs.

Students will master 10 core skills. The ones most integral to classroom learning: Listening following directions; asking for help; ignoring distractions; dealing with teasing; being rejected; or being left out; apologizing; dealing with consequences; understanding your own and other feelings; dealing with anger/walking away from a fight; dealing with peer pressure; dealing with accusations.

Students will gain 10 more advanced skills: setting a goal, evaluating yourself, beginning/ending a conversation, giving/accepting a compliment, being a good leader, standing up for your rights, responding to failure, avoiding trouble, dealing with fear, and dealing with another person's anger.

STOP and THINK is taught by teachers in the classroom. Implementation and reinforcement occurs throughout the school environments. A skill is taught every two weeks. Social skills are behaviors that students learn, just like they learn academic skills. The program underpinnings believes that every student is every adult's responsibility, teachers and staff use the STOP and THINK language continuously throughout the building every student in the school experiences five positive interactions for every negative interaction, teachers reinforce "GOOD CHOICES" throughout the building across all grade levels and students; and staff use problem-solving to address challenging behavior.
